Original Jules Rimet Trophy
In 1928 the President of FIFA, Jules Rimet invited all FIFA countries to play together in a ‘football Olympics’. Thirteen entered the first Jules Rimet Trophy or World Cup in 1930.
You are going to listen to some fun facts about the first World Cup. Can you guess the answers to these questions?
a) Which countries competed in that first competition?
b) Which country has competed in every tournament since?
c) Which of these sentences are true?
1. The first World Cup was in south America.
2. There were no European teams.
3. The King of Yugoslavia played for his country.
4. The French travelled to the tournament on a boat.
5. England did not take part.
The four European teams travelled together on the same ship - and trained on deck. But only the French travelled first class!
