The Firstborn From the Dead

Listen Later

Psalm 118:14-29 & Rev 1:4-8
On this, the second Sunday of Easter, we are returning to the lectionary to continue celebrating the Lord’s resurrection and reign.
In our New Testament reading we encounter the grave's eldest child, Jesus Christ. The womb of the tomb opened and gave birth to her firstborn Son. But what does this birth order suggest?
As the firstborn from the dead, what is expected of Jesus? If there are more children, (Oh! How fertile is the grave?) what is his responsibility to them? Furthermore, how is the tomb’s eldest Son to be honored?
By faith, we expect him to do what it takes to keep the family together. We expect his fidelity to provide for the family everything they need. We expect that his success causes the family to bless the Lord.
Because Jesus is the firstborn from the dead, every child, born from the dead, has the sustenance, grace, peace, and hope that is given in "The Eucharist”. The Thanksgiving continually announces his resurrection power and enables us to endure what this fallen world places before us. Furthermore, the Communion, teaches us that in his love and power we don't just survive, but thrive because of our Elder Brother! The Lord’s Table reminds us that he is coming. This meal feeds our faith, showing us that the Lord is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.
