In the autumn of 1997, Luna's cousin Emmeline disappeared from a cornfield outside Jasper, Ohio. Three days later, she was found walking the gravel roads in her confirmation dress, barefoot, carrying nothing but a rosary that smelled of creek water and sulfur. She never said where she had been, but she started drawing the same symbol over and over — a circle with seven spokes, like a well seen from above.
