Text: Ps. 119:9-16

Key Verse (s):

Psalm 119:9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

Introduction:

How many times have we heard the phrase, “I don’t know what this generation of kids is coming to!” Often, as adults, especially as we get older, we recognize there is something missing in the youth. These same young people will become the next leaders and influencers in our world. A good example of this is the testimony that I heard about a man who is the premier maker of hand-made horse saddles in the United States. His work is so in demand that he has a backlog of orders to fill for several years.

At the time that I heard his testimony, he was in his 80’s and looking to pass on his special skills and insights to his sons. When the interviewer asked about passing on the quality and unique nature of his craftmanship, he replied, “My sons are good and what they are doing, but they are having a hard time understanding and replicating my style and techniques into their work. My customers are drawn to my artisanship, and I am not sure that my sons can duplicate it after they take over the business when I am gone.”

When it comes to faith in Christ and walking with Him, as His sheep, we are confronted with a similar dilemma, what will happen to our children? Will they continue in the faith? This was a concern in Israel as the subsequent generations drew further and further away from their covenant obligations before God Almighty.

This portion of Psalm 119 reflects David’s concern about his children and the younger generation of people who would soon be ascending to places of leadership and influence in Israel. The section starts off with a rhetorical question, “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way?” The “young man” referred to in verse 9 is the word, na’ar, for a young person between infancy and adolescence. So, the young man is most likely a youth under the age of 13, who is demonstrating behavior and attitude patterns that are of concern to David. And God, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit has prompted David to record God’s thoughts on the matter of what it takes for a young person to correct their ways and live a life of integrity, honor, and moral purity.

Therefore, from the Scriptures we will learn….

Every believer can live a clean and holy life
