In this fourth lesson, we are going to talk about how music has loud and soft sounds and other performance directions indicating that there is something special that you need to do to play the music the way the composer intended. What are these signs and symbols called? Sometimes we use the word 'dynamics' and sometimes we say 'performance directions'. Either way, you will need to think about how you will perform your piece(s) when you see certain terms and symbols. Sometimes editors and publishers leave out symbols and terms altogether. If this happens, a likely explanation is that you have the freedom to interpret the music at will. Then, later down the line you may encounter "urtext editions" in classical music. These are printed versions "intended to reproduce the original intention of the composer as exactly as possible, without any added or changed material." Listen now as CMajor covers a list of words and symbols and their meanings. Thank you for listening!
