With incremental slowness, Vera raised the lamp above her head and pressed forward into the darkness. She almost tripped when the floor gave out from under her foot and flailed. The lamplight revealed a railing to her left, and Vera caught herself just in time so she didn’t fall down the stairs. 

Stairs? Stairs at the back of a closet? They were rough-hewn and cut into the earth. She had to be dreaming. How was something like this even possible? She should stop prying and return to her own bedroom before Clara came back and caught her sneaking about. Yet… Vera glanced over her shoulder towards the open door. 

Come Here. Something whispered to Vera, urging her back toward the darkness. Telling her to step down. Down into the underground.

Fog drenched Edwin and Nora Wells's cabin, casting it in a foreboding twilight that threatened to swallow their small piece of heaven. The forest surrounding the silent home was absent of bird calls, the sound of lapping waves, and the croak of pond frogs. In the eerie silence that entrenched the land, only one sound could be heard—the haunting, echoing cry of a child. 

“Mama! Papa! Help!” the cry burrowed through the pine walls of the cabin, pleading and wailing in the voice of Nora and Edwin's young son, Eddy. Eddy’s plaintive voice was followed by the raucous echo of another boy, Conner.

“Momma! Papa! Help!”  came Conner's voice, taunting and teasing Eddy's parents. No, not a boy, a thing, a thing of towering limbs and snarling teeth, a thing not of this earth, and that thing. It had their boy.

 Ding. Ding. Ding.

The emergency bell rang through the small town, cutting through thin walls and cloth tents, pulling the people of Murkwood from the comfort of their homes.

“The creek is gone! Don’t panic. Everyone, go to the town square! The mayor has called for a town hall!” came a man's voice, his words carried down the line by the next person and the next, fast as a wildfire. 

While the creek burbled and sludged like the dregs at the bottom of a coffee cup, word of its sudden disappearance made its way back to Vera’s ears, where she and the others stood on the shoreline. Vera, Gayla, Felix, Ezekiel, and the Southies stared out at what had once been a creek in wonder that was quickly turning to horror.
