Unsolved and Unforgotten

The Franklin Expedition — Into the Ice

Listen Later

This episode explores the tragic mystery of the Franklin Expedition, in which two ships—HMS Erebus and HMS Terror—set out in 1845 under Sir John Franklin to discover the Northwest Passage but never returned.

The ships became trapped in Arctic ice, and after years without rescue, the surviving crew abandoned them in 1848 and attempted to travel south on foot. Evidence from later expeditions and Inuit accounts revealed a grim fate—starvation, extreme conditions, and even signs of cannibalism. High levels of lead found in remains suggest that contaminated food may have contributed to confusion and poor decision-making.

For over a century, the fate of the expedition remained largely unknown until the wrecks of both ships were discovered in 2014 and 2016. Despite these findings, many details of the crew’s final days remain unclear.

The Franklin Expedition stands as a haunting story of ambition, endurance, and human limits in one of the harshest environments on Earth— a journey into the unknown that never truly returned.
