December 1998, the night before Christmas Eve. Luna’s aunt sends her to Shadow Creek Church to retrieve a forgotten casserole dish from the parish hall potluck. The church is dark, the parking lot empty, but someone has strung a fresh garland of pine and red berries across the front doors — even though the building has been locked since sunset. Inside, the lights flicker on as she enters. A single red ribbon lies on the altar step. The organ plays a note she’s never heard before, low and sustained, vibrating through the floorboards. She follows the sound to the basement, where the old boiler room door stands open, and a wreath of dried yew hangs on the wall, and the smell of pine smoke comes from somewhere below. She calls out. No one answers. But the footsteps behind her are not her own.
