The Gay Rights Movement: Before and After Stonewall / Clayton Howard

Listen Later

June 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riot that marked the birth of the modern LGBT rights movement. It is also the 4th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark decision on same-sex marriage, Obergefell v. Hodges. Ohio State historian Clayton Howard discusses the history behind these two important events, including homophile societies during the early Cold War, gay liberation in the late 1960s and 1970s, lesbian feminism, the AIDS crisis, and the push for same-sex marriage at the end of the twentieth century.
