The Black Box

The Geometry of Fear

Listen Later

The monster you can see is never as scary as the one you can't.

Hollywood directors know that 90% of a horror movie isn't terror; it’s dread. Terror is the moment the beast attacks. Dread is the silence before it happens. Dread relies entirely on one variable: Distance.

If you were trapped in a 400-square-foot studio apartment with a ghost, you wouldn't be scared. You would be annoyed. You would know exactly where it is. But in a mansion, the ghost could be anywhere. That uncertainty is what paralyzes you.

We think we want space from our problems. We think distance brings safety. We are wrong. Distance breeds the unknown, and the unknown breeds fear. "We need to talk" is a sentence that destroys you. "You're fired" is a sentence you can fight.

Stop living in the west wing of your own life. Close the distance. Move in with your monsters. You will find they are just bad roommates.
