"The Gift of Listening Ear"
Philippians 2:3
When you do things, do not let selfishness or pride be your guide. Instead, be humble and give more honor to others than to yourselves.
We are admonished throughout all of Scripture to watch our words: We are to offer God praise and thanksgiving (Psalm100:4); we are to treat the name of God with utmost respect (Exodus 20:7); we are to be gentle in the face of anger (Proverbs15:1); we are to build others up (Ephesians 4:29); we are to avoid profanity and coarse language (Ephesians 5:4); and we are to tell the truth (Exodus 20:16 and 23:1). James says that our words are like the rudder on a ship or a spark that starts fire-they can do great works or cause great damage (3:2-8)!
One other crucial way we are to watch our words is by simply remaining silent and listening to others: “My dear friends, you should be quick to listen and slow to speak or to get angry” (James 1:19 NKJV). If you stop to think about it, listening is actually one of the most powerful expressions of love. Because listening says to a person: You are important to me; your ideas and feelings matter to me; share your life with me. We live in a fast pace now, busy, and noisy culture. The TV And radio and other forms of entertainment bombard us from morning to night. Media superstars are referred to as “talking heads." No wonder so many of us feel unheard and underappreciated. Maybe there's no one there to listen to you right, but you could be there to listen to someone else. In Philippians 2:4, Paul says to us: “Do not be interested only in your own life, but be interested in the lives of others. ”The ratio of how much we listen to how much we talk is a pretty good barometer of how much we really look to the interests of others. Does this mean that you are to be doomed to a life of never sharing what's on your heart and mind? Absolutely not! For in the same way that when we give, we receive back so much more; when we give the gift of a listening ear, others reach out in their hearts to know us better.
