On a serene, rocky beach by the Antarctic shores, the sun was beginning to rise, casting a beautiful gentle glow over the landscape.
The clear blue sky above scattered with white puffy clouds made the day perfect for a small adventure.
Among the bustling colony of gentoo penguins, two particular penguins… Pip and Pebble, were about to share a tender moment together.
Pip, with his bright orange-red bill and his feet just a little too big and a little too short, had spent the morning fumbling around collecting the perfect rock ready for a meticulous cleaning.
And the perfect rock he found indeed… a small, smooth stone. “Perfect”, he thought to himself,as he hid it away.
He knew that Pebble, his closest friend, loved collecting unique and beautiful rocks.
Pip's heart fluttered with excitement and a bit of nervousness as he polished the stone with love and care, hoping it would be the perfect gift for his best friend.
Pebble was in her own world… busy arranging her collection of small stones, as she likes to do whenever time permits.
Each one a token of friendship and affection from her colony members. Pips pile being the largest and most carefully stacked.
Pebble could see right through Pip's crooked smile as he approached, her eyes lighting up with anticipation.
She could easily recognize the look of determination and warmth in her friend's eyes, despite his best efforts to the contrary.
"Pip! What are you up to?" Pebble asked, tilting her head curiously, as to not tip him off and let HIM lead…
“Umm…”
Pip shuffled his feet, a bit shy but filled with anticipation.
"I… I… I found something special for you, Pebble... I hope you like it," he said, holding out the gleaming rock with eyes closed, giving her the opportunity to snear if she must.
Instead, Pebble's eyes widened in delight.
She took the rock gently, examining its smooth surface and unique patterns. "Oh, Pip, it's beautiful!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you so much," she exclaimed, her voice filled with genuine gratitude and joy.
Just two penguins sharing a moment of quiet happiness, enjoying the simple act of giving and receiving. No small gift… deepening their bond.
Around them, the ocean waves lapped gently against the shore as they always have… the sun and moon oblivious it all…
The other penguins continued on with their daily activities as if nothing ever happened… unaware of the special moment that had just taken place.
Unaware of the connection seeping deep and an understanding that this is what life is all about.
Pip and Pebble don't talk, they just sit quietly together staring at the pebbles and all they mean between them.
As the day went on, as they always do, Pip and Pebble waddled side by side, enjoying the beauty of their surroundings and the warmth of their glowing friendship.
They know that it wasn't simply in the small stones they cherished, it was in the, not so little, gestures and shared moments that made their bond truly special… that made the ROCKS truly special.
Have YOU given a rock to someone you love today?
Cheers
