“Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he
promised, as I told you before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
– Acts 1:4-5
God has gifts for His people. The gift of the Holy Spirit is an experiential reality. John’s baptism represents repentance but there is a separate experience. There is a profound experience that God is willing to give us when we ask to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. The very term “baptized with the Holy Spirit” implies an immersion in the life of the Spirit. If the Spirit overwhelms you like a baptism, you can’t imagine him merely sneaking in quietly without stirring things up.
