THE GOD WE WORSHIP -- Psalm 18:1-3

Listen Later

As I have mentioned many times from this pulpit often the most difficult part of preparing a message is determining what God would have me share with you each week. I DO NOT want to preach what I want to preach. I DO NOT want to preach simply to fill up the time from the end of the song service to the final prayer. It is my desire to share the appropriate message to the appropriate people at the appropriate time. I never know from week to week who will be present in the services and what word of encouragement or witness of the truth or instruction and invitation to salvation they might need. Sometimes (and the problem lies with me and not with God) I have trouble determining that, so I fall back on what an older preacher once told me, “When you don’t know what to preach, preach about Jesus, preach about God.” So that is what I intend to do today. The inscription of this psalm gives us some insight into the background of these verses. “To the chief musician, A Psalm of David, the servant of the Lord, who spake unto the Lord the words of this song in the day that the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.” This psalm was originally a song written to glorify God and to honor Him for delivering David from King Saul and from all his enemies. It can also be found in II Samuel 22. David’s foes had been vanquished, and he wanted to express gratitude to God for His great provision. When running from Saul, David was in constant danger of death. Now that he has been delivered from his enemies, David can sing the song of victory. When God saved us, He gave us victory over our enemies. Listen to I Corinthians 15:57 : “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Also, I John 5:4-5: “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. (5) Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” Romans 8:37-39 says, “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. (38) For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, (39) Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” We were in danger of death, of dying without Jesus, but we have been saved, and we have been delivered from Satan’s snare by God’s grace and Christ’s sacrifice. This gives us ample reason to worship and to praise God. . As we look at these first 3 verses of this psalm, let’s allow God’s Word to remind us of: Who He is; What he has done for us; And, what He can do for us. Let’s be reminded why our God is the God we worship. "Worship" is from Old English “worthship” and means to ascribe worth to someone. We worship God because He alone is worthy. Here are a few reasons He is worthy. First of all note that . . .

I. GOD DESIRES OUR CLOSENESS -- VS. 1.

II. GOD DESERVES OUR CONFIDENCE-- VS. 2.

III. GOD IS DUE OUR COMMITMENT -- VS. 3.
