The God Who Feeds the Birds

Listen Later

Scripture

Matthew 6:25–26 (NRSV)

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink,

or about your body, what you will wear.

Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

Look at the birds of the air;

they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns,

and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

Are you not of more value than they?

Refrain

If You feed the birds, You will feed me too.

Poem

Mary Oliver, from The Messenger

“My work is loving the world.

Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird—

equal seekers of sweetness.

Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.

Here the clam deep in the speckled sand.

Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?

Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me

keep my mind on what matters,

which is my work,

which is mostly standing still and learning to be astonished.”
