Everyone called Bertha Gifford the Good Samaritan: she offered her home to those in need, she sat by the sick, and administered their medicine or made them a home cooked meal. As years passed, neighbors started to notice that several of Bertha’s patients never seemed to recover, even when the doctor was confident they would.
