The goodness of God is expressed throughout Scripture in a two-fold manner - through His mercy and His grace. It is expressed, also, many times in relation to God's righteousness and justice. In Romans 2 we are asked the question, 'Do you despise the riches of His goodness ... not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?' The goal of the goodness of God (His mercy and grace) is to lead us to repentance - in the process of redemption and restoration. However, we presume upon His goodness!
