A Gospel Centered Gospel

Last slide – understand the bad news

1) Mark's Gospel isn't a biography, it's all about the GOSPEL.

"1The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God." (Mark 1:1, ESV)

· Mark says the Gospel is CENTERED on Jesus.

"8Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel," (2 Timothy 2:8, NIV84)

· Mark unveils the identity of Jesus – the SON of God.

"9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."" (Mark 1:9–11, ESV)

2) John's mission was to SOFTEN Israels heart.

"4John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins." (Mark 1:4, ESV)

· He does his by confronting their SINFUL behavior.

"5And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. 7And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."" (Mark 1:5–8, ESV)

3) The Gospel begins & ends with JESUS.

"14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."" (Mark 1:14–15, ESV)

"38And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38, ESV)

"38And he said to them, "Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out." 39And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons." (Mark 1:38–39, ESV)

4) The Gospel survives even the WORST temptation.

"12The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him." (Mark 1:12–13, ESV)

5) The Gospel thrives when it's PASSED ON to others.

"16Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17And Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men." 18And immediately they left their nets and followed him." (Mark 1:16–18, ESV)
