Shame says that we are unworthy and can never be accepted. Pride says that we are sufficient and do not need anyone's help. While they appear to be opposite struggles, both seek identity and worth apart from Jesus Christ. All people have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, leaving no room for boasting. Yet believers are justified freely by God's grace through the redemption accomplished by Christ. The cross exposes the seriousness of our sin and displays the greatness of God's grace. Because Christ bore the guilt and condemnation His people deserve, Christians no longer need to prove themselves through pride or hide themselves in shame.
