John 7 unfolds during Sukkot—the Feast of Tabernacles, one of Israel's greatest annual celebrations. The people have gathered to remember how God provided food, shelter, light, and water for their ancestors in the wilderness.

But while everyone celebrates God's past provision, the God they're looking for is standing among them.

Throughout the chapter, people debate Jesus' following, credentials, background, and endorsements. Then Jesus cuts through all the noise with a simple invitation:

“If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.”

What are you thirsty for—relationally, emotionally, spiritually? Where are you searching for significance, fulfillment, or life?

Jesus' invitation is not simply to learn more information about him, but to “taste and see that the Lord is good.”

What happens when the Jesus we're actually following turns out to be more demanding than the Jesus we expected?

At the end of John 6, many of Jesus' disciples decide they've had enough. His teaching is too difficult, his claims are too great, and they walk away.

Jesus turns to the Twelve and asks, “Do you want to go away as well?”

Peter's answer captures something essential about Christian faith: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

Peter doesn't know everything he's signed up for. But he knows who he's said yes to.

Along the way, this sermon explores the scandal of the cross, God's sovereignty and human freedom, fearless evangelism, Judas' warning about proximity without relationship, and what it means to make Jesus—not merely his gifts—the foundation of our lives.

“This is a hard teaching. Who can listen to it?”

In John 6:41–60, those words don't come from Jesus' enemies. They come from his disciples.

As Jesus calls himself the Bread of Life, his followers become increasingly uncomfortable with his claims. Jesus is too familiar, too exclusive, and finally too demanding. Then he uses startlingly physical language: unless we eat his flesh and drink his blood, we have no life in us.

What does Jesus mean—and why does he choose language this provocative?

In this sermon, we explore the sacramental and deeply embodied nature of Christian faith, and what it might mean to wake up every morning hungry for the presence of Christ.

If salvation is a free gift, why does Jesus tell us to work for it?

In John 6:25–40, the crowd asks Jesus what they must do to perform the “works of God.” His answer turns their question upside down. Salvation begins not with our work for God, but with God's work in us. Yet grace doesn't leave us passive—we are invited to live into the gift we've already received.

Jesus then gives us a simple picture of what we need most: “I am the bread of life.”

What would it look like to begin each day with the prayer, “Lord, give us this bread”?

Why did Jesus refuse to become king when the crowd was finally ready to crown Him?

In John 6:1–21, Jesus feeds the five thousand, walks on the water, and then slips away when the people try to make Him king by force. Their instincts weren't entirely wrong—Jesus truly is King. But they wanted a king who would meet their immediate desires, not the King who would reign through the cross.

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:7–15

Why would God place the immeasurable treasure of the gospel inside ordinary, fragile people?

Paul describes Christians as “jars of clay”: common and breakable vessels carrying the good news of Jesus. Our weakness is not evidence that the gospel has failed. It is often the very place where God’s surpassing power becomes most visible.

David Frederick explores three ways suffering and human limitation point beyond themselves:

1. Our suffering shows that Christ is sufficient.

2. Our suffering displays the life and sacrificial love of Jesus.

3. Our suffering will ultimately be surpassed by resurrection.

We may be afflicted but not crushed, perplexed but not driven to despair, persecuted but not forsaken, and struck down but not destroyed. Our pain is real, but it does not have the final word.

God does not ask us to pretend that suffering is good. He promises that it can be redeemed, that Christ will remain with us within it, and that resurrection will one day bring frailty, grief, and death to an end.

How do we hear God when we are facing an important decision—and what should we do when God seems silent?

Scott Palmbush explores the familiar words of Proverbs 3:5–6 and reframes our understanding of divine guidance. God does not merely want to give us answers that relieve our anxiety. He wants a trusting relationship with us.

A straight path is not always the shortest or easiest path. God may guide us through unexpected turns while forming our character, deepening our trust, and teaching us to walk closely with him.

This message offers practical guidance for discernment through prayer, silence, Scripture, Christian community, humility, and surrender. It also offers reassurance for those who fear making the wrong choice: your life is not a perfect plan that you are always in danger of ruining. God is with you, and he is able to guide, correct, and sustain you.
