Publisher's Summary:
"The Grand Babylon Hotel" is a novel by Arnold Bennett about the mysterious disappearance of a German prince. The protagonists are an American millionaire, Mr. Racksole, and his daughter Nella. While staying at the supremely exclusive Grand Babylon Hotel, Nella asks for a steak and Bass beer for dinner, but the order is refused. To get her what she wants, Racksole buys the entire hotel.
Strange things are happening in the there. First, Racksole notices the headwaiter winking at his daughter's friend, Reginald Dimmock. He dismisses the headwaiter. The next day a pretty, efficient hotel clerk disappears. Then Prince Eugen of Posen, who was to come to the hotel and meet his youthful uncle Prince Aribert, never turns up. Then the body of Dimmock - who was an equerry to the prince, come ahead to prepare for their visit - is found. He was obviously poisoned. And soon after, Dimmock's body disappears...

Members Reviews:
Entertaining despite its flaws
I occasionally enjoy classic mystery, if only to indulge in a bit of wonderment and a laugh at the outdated behaviors and attitudes of the characters. This book, apparently quite well-received in its day (there is no original publication date on the Kindle edition, but I learned it was originally published in 1902), was no exception. The moneyed and titled characters rule their individual roosts without, apparently, any resentment from the lowly masses who serve them; the main characters vie between shrewd deduction and incredibly nave and foolish behavior. The women, whether spunky or cowed, faint constantly, and everyone falls desperately in love at the drop of a hat. Despite these flaws, or perhaps because of them, this was a fairly entertaining novel of its sort, with a mystery at least as complex as the many cozy mysteries in constant circulation today.
Quite a story!
Arnold Bennett is an author I admire and was glad to find a source to be able to read this book in my Kindle. A little wordy but filled with much elaborate description of the surroundings of the novel. Of course, the good guys were too good and the bad guys were too evil! I enjoyed it very much.
Terrible writing.
Ugh!

This paper back book was of good quality. It looked exactly as I had anticipated. No complaints as to this item nor to the promptness of delivery.
