The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, chapter 13 , Narrated by Isaac Birchall.
In this chapter, the Joad family are truly on their way to California, with Al driving the truck, listening to, and feeling the car, making sure that there are no strange noises or shakes that the truck makes. While driving, he asks ma if she is concerned about California, and if she thinks that it will live up to what they all hope for it to be.
The Joads continue their journey, driving through the cities and towns that line route 66. They eventually decide to stop for the evening, reasoning that they can't make the trip in one go. they pull up, and meet a husband and wife, who are also leaving for California. Grandpa's condition worsens and the new family is kind enough to let Grandpa sleep in their tent. Grandpa doesn't sleep however, and has a stroke, while the wife, and Casey are at his bedside.
The Joads have to decide how to bury Grandpa. If they message the coroner's office then they pay $40. If they don't then he will have to be buried here in an unmarked grave. They conclude to bury him here, and to avoid any policing, they have Tom write a message in a bottle for him. Later, Tom and Al suggest to the family and their new friends that they should share the load. Their truck is too heavy as it is, and if they share the load, then they'll all have a getter chance of getting to California. Everyone agrees.
