The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, chapter 15, narrated by Isaac Birchall
A waitress named Mae works in a little truck-stop like in the second chapter, when we first met Tom. Mae works and watches the cars go by, hoping for truckers as they leave big tips. Two, that Mae knows from previous trips come in for some pie, they discuss the migration and the state of people's cars. Then a migrant comes in... he begs for some food as he has little money. Mae is at first dismissive, but after some persuasion from her cook, she backs down and gives them the food.
