The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, chapter 28 Narrated by Isaac Birchall
In this Chapter, The Joads continue working on the cotton fields in the day, and return to their box car home at night, with Ma sneaking food off to Tom while his face recovers.  After working a while however, Ruthie lets slip that Tom is hiding because he has killed someone. ma has to slink away to tell Tom, and come to terms with herself, that He has to go.
Ma comes back from her conversation with Tom. She finds out that he is looking for workers to pick cotton on the farm he's hiring for. She takes this news back to her family and her neighbors. They also announce that their daughter and Al are going to get married. The next day they set out to work, hoping to get there before everyone else, and the looming storm so they can earn as much as possible before the cotton becomes too wet.
