- The term is attributed to Baron Justinian von Welz, a 17th-century Lutheran nobleman
- Two centuries later, the Englishman Hudson Taylor is believed to have used the idea of the Great Commission to justify Christian missionary efforts, particularly the China Inland Mission that he founded in 1866.
