The Great Mac Memory Vanishing Act: Why High-End Desktops Are Disappearing

Apple’s online store has suddenly slapped a Currently Unavailable sign on its most powerful desktop configurations, leaving pro users in a bit of a pickle. Specifically, Mac mini models with 32GB or 64GB of RAM and Mac Studio versions packing 128GB or 256GB of memory have vanished from the order list. This follows Apple’s recent move to scrap the massive 512GB option entirely last month. For the few models still listed as available, shipping estimates have ballooned to as long as three months, making a quick upgrade feel like a distant dream.
While we would love to think this is just Apple clearing the decks for the shiny new M5 chips, the real culprit is likely a global memory chip shortage fueled by the insatiable appetite of AI servers. These components are being gobbled up by tech giants, leaving high-spec personal computers in the dust. Looking ahead, we might see new Mac Studio models with M5 Max and Ultra chips at WWDC this June, followed by an M5 Mac mini update around September or October. Until then, you are stuck with a tough choice: settle for less memory today or play the long waiting game for tomorrow’s powerhouses.
