Sonja Caison has some amazing tips to help you develop your team, establish standards, and how to avoid responding emotionally based on first instincts. You’ll hear about some great resources for you and your team, how to start your own business, and how to lower your turnover.
- When developing your team, you can give people on your team great opportunities, but they have to want to take those opportunities and excel in them. Be patient and allow them to see they can do actually do it and are ready to tackle that challenge.
Setting consistent expectations and having standard procedures in place are keys to keeping your turnover rates low.As a business leader, you have a great responsibility to make the right decisions, not just for the business, but for all of the people who depend on your business such as your team and their families.Business leaders need to know that when they handle a situation, their team is watching them and will point to how they previously dealt with it when a similar situation arises in the future. Because of this, leaders must have a consistent approach to handling issues. When you handling a problem take the extra step of writing down how you’re doing it so you have that to refer back to if you face a similar situation. This becomes a resource to give your employees and everyone should use it frequently to maintain consistency. As counter-intuitive as it may seem, one of the keys to growing your business is to lower your standard slightly. It’s better to focus on getting your team to do 90% than to obsess over the last 10% which can lead to alienating employees. It’s imperative to know yourself and understand what triggers you. When something happens that could trigger you, take a moment so that you can respond from a state of calm rather than a state of fear, frustration, etc.- “I really needed to show them that the opportunity is there, but then have the patience to wait for them to see that this is something they can do and then allow them for them to really come to me to say, yes, they're ready to move into that opportunity” - Sonja Caison
