The Greedy Mantis and the Aardwolf

Listen Later

“The Mantis and the Aardwolf: A Bushman Trickster Tale”

In the vast Kalahari Desert, wisdom often comes through painful lessons. When Kwammanga the Ichneumon takes his family to visit his aunt, the Aardwolf, he reluctantly brings along his grandfather, the Mantis—a character famous throughout Bushman folklore for his impulsive nature and inability to follow simple rules.

What begins as a respectful family visit turns into a cautionary tale about greed and disrespect. After Kwammanga successfully negotiates for a small aardwolf to feed his dusty, hungry family, the visit should have ended there. But the Mantis, driven by his insatiable appetite, makes a crucial error: he returns alone to demand more from their host.

The Aardwolf mother, protective of her remaining children and tired of the Mantis’s presumption, teaches him an unforgettable lesson about hospitality, boundaries, and the consequences of taking advantage of others’ generosity. What follows is a painful but deserved comeuppance that leaves the Mantis literally burned by his own greed.

This traditional Bushman story captures the wisdom of the /Xam people, exploring themes of respect, family dynamics, and the importance of knowing when enough is enough.
