A British airplane carrying Major Crespin, his wife Lucilla, and Dr. Traherne crash-lands near the palace of a local Raja, the ruler of an isolated and exotic Eastern state. The Raja — played with wit and menace by Orson Welles — receives them graciously, but beneath his polite exterior lies a cunning, vengeful man with a deep resentment of British colonialism.
