Another William Powell outing as famed detective Philo Vance. It's an early talkie, and it suffers from all the problems of early talkies, but William Powell is great, and the film is stronger than his previous outing as Vance in The Canary Murder Case. Winner of Photoplay's Best Picture of the Month for September 1929 (which, hey, okay, it doesn't sound like much today, but we were releasing way more movies per month in 1929.)
