The Grindr Killer case update: The Inquest (2021)

Listen Later

The body of Anthony Walgate, 23, was found outside the flats on Cooke Street, barking in the early hours of Thursday June 19, 2014; the first of four drug-related murders of young men carried out by Port over a 16-month period.

In his 999 calls, Port claimed not to know what happened to Anthony Walgate but later told police they met for a sexual relationship, inquest jurors heard.

Port was later convicted in March 2015 of lying to police about the circumstances of Anthony Walgate’s death, but by that time he had already killed his next two victims Gabriel Kovari, 22, and Daniel Whitworth, 21, the jury was told.

Fellow victims were found dead by the same dog walker on August 28 and September 20, 2014, respectively, in a corner of the walled cemetery near Port’s address.

he final victim, Jack Taylor, 25, was found on the other side of the stone wall on September 14, 2015.

Port, now 46, was found guilty at the Old Bailey in 2016 of the four murders and sentenced to a whole life order.

Over the next few weeks an inquest jury will hear how Port murdered Walgate, 23, Gabriel Kovari, 22, and Daniel Whitworth, 21, and Jack Taylor, 25, with fatal doses of the drug GHB between June 2014 and September 2015, and sexually assaulted many other men.

The inquest aims to look at the competency of the Met Police in investigating the crimes, which were at first ruled to be non-suspicious drug overdoses.
