The Growing Church in Antioch

Listen Later

What happens when persecution meets the power of the Holy Spirit? In Acts 11:19-30, we discover something remarkable: the early church didn't break under intense suffering—it multiplied. Beginning with Stephen's martyrdom in Acts 7, believers were scattered across the ancient world, yet instead of hiding in fear, they carried the gospel message everywhere they went. This passage takes us to Antioch, the third-largest city of the ancient world, where a beautiful and diverse expression of the church emerged. When Barnabas arrived to investigate what was happening, he immediately recognized the grace of God at work among people who looked nothing like him. The message challenges us to offer our sufferings to the Holy Spirit rather than holding them in isolation. The Antioch believers embodied this so fully that they were first called 'Christians' there, a nickname that stuck because Jesus truly was the most important thing about them. When famine threatened, they didn't hoard resources but generously gave to their brothers and sisters in Judea. We're called to recognize the Spirit's work around us, to allow our hardships to be transformed by God's presence, and to trust that every season—mountaintop or valley—can display the unstoppable gospel through our lives.
