When you find a piece of news circulating on social media that looks suspicious, a bit weird, or even too good to be true, it would be good to refrain from sharing it. But, unfortunately, that is how misinformation goes around on the internet and how sometimes the consequences on our societies can be quite relevant and dangerous.
Sharing and amplifying the messages reach is a powerful way to make positive changes happens in our society, but there is always the other side of the coin — misinformation uses the same media, and it may be even more powerful when knowledgeable criminals intentionally manipulate people.
Fortunately, some experts are researching and studying this phenomenon, and there are solutions. Still, it requires education, there is not an easy tech button at the moment, and probably there never will be one.
