On the night of June 11, 1962, Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin climbed out of their cells at Alcatraz and disappeared into San Francisco Bay. They were never seen again. More than six decades later, one question still refuses to go away: did they survive?

In this episode of The Growth Time Machine, Daniel Curtis speaks with Jolene Babyak, Alcatraz historian and author, and someone with an extraordinary personal connection to the most famous prison escape in history.

Jolene grew up on Alcatraz. Her father was the prison’s Associate Warden and, with Warden Olin Blackwell away, was effectively in charge on the night Morris and the Anglin brothers escaped. And while three prisoners were carrying out one of the most ingenious escapes ever attempted, Jolene was asleep on the island, waking the following morning to the escape siren. In their conversation,

Daniel and Jolene explore the evidence, the enduring claims and the unanswered questions surrounding the escape .Was Alan West actually the driving force behind the plan rather than Frank Morris? Why was a guard tower unmanned that night? What was the unexplained noise heard during the escape? And could Morris and the Anglin brothers really have survived the currents of San Francisco Bay?

They also examine some of the claims that have kept the mystery alive for generations: the alleged letter from John Anglin, the famous photograph said to show the brothers alive in Brazil, cards reportedly sent to the family, and stories surrounding their mother’s funeral.

Jolene gives her own view on whether the men survived, why the absence of bodies does not necessarily prove anything, and why the lack of confirmed evidence on land matters.

She also shares the side of Alcatraz that films rarely show: the families who lived there, the children who travelled by boat to school in San Francisco, the community on the island, and what it was really like growing up beside America’s most notorious federal prison. Sir Nicholas Winton helped save 669 mostly Jewish children from Czechoslovakia on the eve of the Second World War. His son, Nick Winton, grew up knowing almost nothing about it.In this episode of The Growth Time Machine, Daniel Curtis sits down with Nick for a deeply personal conversation about his father, one of the most remarkable rescue efforts of the twentieth century, and Nick’s own extraordinary life.In 1938, Nicholas Winton travelled to Prague as the situation in Czechoslovakia became increasingly dangerous. Working with others in Prague and Britain, he helped organise the documents, money, foster families and transport needed to bring children to safety in Britain. Eight transports made it out, but a ninth, carrying around 250 children, was due to leave on 1 September 1939 and never did. Almost all of those children were later killed in the Holocaust.Nick explains how deeply this affected his father and why Nicholas Winton remained more focused on the children he could not save than on the 669 who escaped. He also talks about why his father disliked comparisons with Oskar Schindler. Nicholas Winton never saw himself as a lone hero; he believed the rescue had been a team effort and that many of those working directly with families and children in Prague had faced far greater danger than he had.For decades, Nicholas Winton spoke very little about what he had done. Nick himself says he knew nothing about the rescue until he was around 36, when the story emerged publicly through the BBC programme That’s Life!But this conversation is not simply about being the son of Sir Nicholas Winton. Nick has an extraordinary story of his own. He built businesses, experienced dramatic reversals of fortune, survived a malignant brain tumour, faced the possibility of a very short life, and continued rebuilding after things went wrong.He talks openly about success, failure, money, responsibility, resilience and the perspective that comes from being told your life may be much shorter than you expected.
