I'm usually open to receiving hand-me-downs from folks, and on the top level, it's dharma, ie, receiving a welcome gift from a loving energy with gratitude.

From the giving side, though, I believe it creates karma, just from the originating over-consumption of material things. No shame, but we've all been hoodwinked to think at the top level, rather than making better decisions before over-consuming in the the first place.
