The fallout from Nick’s betrayal shakes every corner of Gilead—and The Handmaid’s Tale delivers one of its most emotionally charged episodes yet. Paul and Caroline are back to break it all down.
“Shattered” picks up immediately after last week’s shocking ending. June is forced to silently listen as Commander Wharton details Nick’s betrayal to Serena. Meanwhile, Jezebels becomes a massacre site: the workers are rounded up and executed, with Janine alone spared—with the nasty Commander Bell as her benefactor.
June and Nick share a tense, painful car ride toward the border. Nick tries to justify his actions, claiming June never understood the risks he carried in Gilead. But June isn’t interested in apologies. She leaves him behind, striding toward the rebel base—and toward a life without Nick in it.
Back in New Bethlehem, Serena faces ridicule from the other Wives at her bridal shower. She demands a grander wedding from Wharton, who agrees but insists that Handmaids be part of the guest list—a decision that will have explosive consequences.
At the Mayday base, June confesses her role in the failed Jezebel’s mission, costing her standing among the rebels. But when Commander Lawrence visits, June realizes that Serena’s wedding offers a rare opportunity. A new plan quickly forms.
The episode ends with a pulse-pounding montage: poison is delivered to Rita, who will be baking Serena’s wedding cake. Moira and June are hidden among the Handmaids at the Red Center, preparing to arm the women for what’s coming next.
In this podcast episode, we dive into:
The emotional rift between June and Nick
Serena’s power plays and how they backfire
Janine’s mysterious survival
And the rebels’ daring plan for what should be Gilead’s biggest uprising yet
