The Hands of Jesus
The Hands that Hold Everything
John 3:31-36 (NIV) – [31] “The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. [32] He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. [33] The man who has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. [34] For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit. [35] The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. [36] Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.”
“John’s statement revealed his attitude about Christ’s superiority and preeminence over him… Christ’s heavenly origin gives him superiority over every person.” (Life Application NT Commentary)
John 16:28 (NIV) – [28] “I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”
John 6:46 (NIV) – [46] “No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father.”
1. He holds heaven is in His hands.
Hebrews 1:10 (NIV) – [10] He also says, “In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.”
Romans 3:3-4 (NIV) – [3] What if some did not have faith? Will their lack of faith nullify God’s faithfulness? [4] Not at all! Let God be true, and every man a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.”
John 3:11 (NIV) – [11] I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.
“…John was looking at mankind in general and simply stating that the Savior’s teachings were rejected by the majority. Jesus was the One who came down from heaven, but comparatively few were willing to listen to Him.” (Believer’s Bible Commentary)
2. He holds the truth in His hands.
John 14:10, 14 (NIV) – [10] “Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work… [24] He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
“All of God’s former messengers received a limited ‘measure’ of God’s ‘Spirit.’ The Spirit came on the Old Testament prophets only for limited times and purposes. However, God gave His Spirit to Jesus without limit. This guaranteed the truth of Jesus’ words.” (Thomas L. Constable’s Notes)
3. He holds the gift of the Spirit in His Hands.
Luke 3:16 (NIV) – [16] John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”
Acts 1:4-5 (NIV) – [4] On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. [5] For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
Matthew 3:16-17 (NIV) – [16] As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. [17] And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
4. He holds love in His hands.
John 13:3 (NIV) – [3] Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God.
5. He holds the universe together in His hands.
Colossians 1:15-17 (NIV) – [15] He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. [16] For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. [17] He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
6. He holds you together in His hands.
Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV) – [18] Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. [19] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, [20] and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
7. He holds all authority in His hands.
