The Happiness Dilemma

Listen Later

On the weekend, I finished reading Madeline Miller's first novel, The Song of Achilles, and WOW that book was amazing! I highly recommend. Since then, I've been thinking a lot about how Achilles' story is applicable today, and I landed on this little analogy about the opportunity cost of happiness. Hope you enjoy!

“No winning words about death to me, shining Odysseus!

By god, I’d rather slave on earth for another man—
some dirt-poor tenant farmer who scrapes to keep alive—
than rule down here over all the breathless dead.”

- Achilles in Homer's Odyssey

All credit for the opening quote goes to the BBC.
