In which Jeanie Deans, having been graciously received by the Duke and his family, embarks on her return journey northwards amidst reflections and anxieties concerning her absent acquaintance. Upon nearing Carlisle, she witnesses the grim aftermath of an execution and encounters the tragic and pitiable figure of Madge Wildfire, whose waning songs and desolation draw from all present a solemn and sorrowful reverence.
