In March of 1997, the  San Diego Sheriffs Department received an anonymous tip, leading them the Heaven's Gate mansion, where 39 members committed a ritualistic suicide. Heaven's Gate provided an insane amount of documentation throughout their existence and told us that the suicide was in order to reach the next level of human existence through an spacecraft trailing the Hale-Bopp comet.
