  • How Did The Business Blender Get Started?

Lori Walker and I weren’t planning to start a business. We were catching up after COVID in yoga pants, with chocolate, a whiteboard, and our usual beverages—Diet Dr Pepper for me and wine for Lori. Then we started talking about what we wanted next.

In this episode, I share how that conversation became The Business Blender. We combined our different strengths and thirty years of entrepreneurial experience to help solopreneur women over forty build businesses that fit their lives.

We’ll talk about why we wanted women to understand and control their technology, how coaching and tech support became part of the platform, and why we’re building a close community where women collaborate and celebrate each other’s progress.

If you’re starting a side business or wondering what your next chapter could look like, you’ll recognize the questions that got us started.

  • What got you started in Kenya?

“What got you started in Kenya?” is the question people ask me most often about our work with 100 Humanitarians International. Considering how much I hate heat, dust, and bugs, it’s a fair question.

In this episode, I share how my current business partner, Lori Walker, kept encouraging me to go, and how my first drum circle at Bridget Cook-Burch’s Inspired Writer’s Retreat brought an unexpected experience of the African savannah and a wall of male lions.

I finally agreed to a one-and-done trip. Then, on day three, sitting in an Anglican church in western Kenya, I felt like a veil dropped—and everything I had done in my life had prepared me to work with families there.

This is a personal conversation about faith, an invitation I resisted, and what we might discover when we give an unfamiliar possibility a chance.

  • What If I Don’t Want to Pick Just One Thing

How do we figure out what’s next when we have so many interests—and don’t want to give any of them up?

In this first episode, I share why business, Kenya, travel, faith, and personal growth are all finding a home in The Heidi Totten Podcast. Apparently, creating a separate podcast for every interest would leave very little time to actually have those interests.

We’ll talk about choosing what deserves our time in midlife, enjoying something without turning it into another job, and trying one small step before committing to an entirely new direction. I also share how Human Design and my faith help me reflect on those decisions.

If you have several ideas competing for your attention, this conversation offers a place to start.
