Growing up, we absorb a lot from the people who raise us. How to act, how to think, how to act in public... Many of us carry the traits of that parental figure deep into adulthood. Sometimes without even realizing it. That's especially true in many black households where lessons taught to children are often aimed at shielding them from the effects of racism.
