wonderful read
Greatly enjoyed this, esp. the fluency of the prose and plotting and the care exerted in the presentation of the characters. Well-observed details--it helps immeasurably that the writer is an actress--create a believable and sympathetic woman who triumphs over the twin jeopardies of pursuit and threat of loss that she finds herself in. The storytelling moves smoothly and plausibly under the distant but gathering storm of WWII; the secondary characters are all well drawn. The States beckon as a new chance for Lily, but it's her British pluck and persistence that wins through in the end, and that makes this book a compelling and enjoyable read.
Such an enjoyable read, couldn't put it down
I loved this book and found it difficult to put down, so much so it was finished in two days sitting up on the last night until 0200 as I just needed to know what happened to the characters. The characters really felt alive for me and I followed their journeys with hope, happiness and sadness all in equal measure. The book had a great ability to draw you into the characters and their lives and I found myself really hoping one in particular got what was coming to her. For a first novel by this author I can only hope she continues to write. A real must read.
Accomplished debut
I greatly enjoyed and admired The Last Dance, and suspect a whole new career for Susan Wooldridge. The book is so cunningly constructed and plotted and so elegantly written that I found it a compulsive page-turner. The straddling of periods and places and social classes (it is very sharp about the latter) is so adroit that you can't help wondering and admiring planning it must have taken. And very moving at the end too - not just about what befalls Lily and Nickie, but also the touching little sketch of poor Miss Timms.
hidden depths
Susan Wooldridge has a delightful eye for detail. She conjures up a world with colour, precision and energy. A splendid feel for character and she has a great ability to create tension; I read a lot of the book with my heart in my mouth. She creates the period excellently and manages to tell a story of emotional and social complexity inside a simple storyline. It kept me gripped to the end and after the epilogue I wanted to go on living with the characters.
I didn't want it to end
I've recommended this book to several friends and none have been disappointed. The story with its rich characters drew me in from the first page. I felt so much sympathy for the main character Lily and was desperately willing her to succeed in her goal. The SS Etoile is a great setting, especially for a story set in the 1930s. If, like me, you like to `get lost' in a book then this is the one to get.
