Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is an organic brain dysfunction primarily affecting the Orbitofrontal Cortex (OFC), which acts as a filter for emotions and impulses. This dysfunction can lead to a "flood" of unfiltered thoughts and feelings, resulting in attention deficit and impulsivity. While a genetic predisposition (increased sensitivity) plays a role, ADHD's development is significantly influenced by early childhood environmental conditions, especially the emotional environment and the bond with the primary caregiver.
Symptoms vary widely, from issues with focus, impulsivity, poor motor coordination, and "time illiteracy," to difficulty understanding social cues. Despite these challenges, individuals with ADHD can achieve extraordinary successes like Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps and gymnast Simone Biles, or conversely, engage in criminal behavior, demonstrating the disorder's diverse manifestations.
For adults, management focuses on self-acceptance, organizing one's environment (diet, sleep, exercise), therapy, and sometimes medication, as ADHD is fundamentally a family disorder requiring a comprehensive approach
