Is Afghanistan safe to visit? What is it really like to travel there as a woman under Taliban rule?

Carrie explains how she chooses where to spend her money, the relationships she has built with Afghan women and why showing the country does not mean endorsing its unelected regime. Carrie recounts some of the most intense moments from her trip: being followed through Kandahar, navigating Taliban checkpoints, losing connectivity after a mountain exploded in front of her and escaping an overwhelming crowd in Jalalabad. She also reveals the unexpected, human side of Afghanistan, from its hospitality, food and green tea culture to the local families she now supports through fundraising and education.

This is a nuanced conversation about Afghanistan beyond the headlines: its people, the Taliban, women’s rights, travel safety, propaganda, responsible tourism and the complicated question of whether outsiders should visit at all.
