The Holstein House Podcast

Episode 148 Preparing the Pantry - Produce

There are three primary ways of preserving the harvest:

Today we will discuss these preservation methods, and more!

Episode 147: Pantry Audit, and Pantry Protein

In this episode we'll take a look at the results of our pantry audit, where I asked you to identify the top 10 purchases you regularly make in your pantry. We'll see if there are more cost-effective, and possibly domestic options that will help with future savings.

We'll also discuss pantry protein options. If beef is too expensive for your budget, what options do you have to extend your ingredients to make meals more affordable. And When Buying Bulk Isn’t the Better Option

What does the coming week of weather have in store, and are you planting a fall crop?

We are building, and rebuilding our pantries here at Holstein House.

Episode 146 Preparing Against Coming Pantry Cost Increases

With the USDA projecting that coffee prices could spike up to 25% and beef climbing another 15% this year, your grocery receipt is about to become your biggest monthly stressor. But what if I told you that by looking at a simple country-of-origin label, you could save hundreds of dollars? Today, we’re building a 'Tariff-Proof Kitchen'

Episode 145: We'll catch up on the growing season, maybe talk about how tariffs may affect pantry stocking by fall. Make a list of what you cooked over the past week or so. Maybe we can start planning on how to build our pantry before things get out-of-hand? Oh, and whatever else you want to cheat about.

As we close out the year, it’s time to sit down and talk about... well, what else? The good, the bad, and the ugly of 2025 are all on the agenda today!

We’re taking a deep dive into the year’s gardening journey, from the simplicity of windowsill scrap gardens and fresh sprouts to the very real challenges of managing a container garden in a changing season. I’m also sharing a first look at the 2026 Farmer’s Almanac and the latest West Virginia Department of Agriculture Bulletin as we begin to look forward.

Stick around as we check in on the whole crew—the dogs, cats, chickens, and ducks—and I'll even share my very first sign of the upcoming Spring season! Whether you're joining me live or catching the replay, let’s reflect on what this year taught us about homesteading, resilience, and the joy of a small-scale harvest."
