The Hooptamist - Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor To Hula Hoop Fanatic

Listen Later

Christine is a 46-year-old woman who lives in the beautiful beach community of Penticton British Columbia, Canada.
She has lived her entire adult life learning to cope with the effects of a traumatic frontal lobe brain injury that she acquired in a horrible motor vehicle accident when she was 16. In the accident one of her best friends tragically lost her life and two girls were left with severe traumatic brain injuries. She was comatose for 77 hours and when she awoke, she couldn’t speak and was trapped in a brain that would never be the same again.
She was endlessly told by doctors and lawyers that she would never hold down a job or relationship. That she would essentially be trapped in her 16-year-old brain forever. She has now been employed at the same place for 26 years and is celebrating 23 years of marriage and 28 years together with her husband.
A year later she met her partner who coincidentally also refuses to grow up and together they have built a life full of fun, compassion, generosity and volunteering in their community.
Christine loves physical fitness but cannot stand going to the gym! So, when she discovered a passion for hooping, she literally ran with it.
She likes to think of herself as a self-proclaimed “Hooptamist” When asked what a Hooptamist is she will tell you, “A Hooptamist is someone who knows that they can master any move if they practice 100 times twice a day for 2 weeks”!
