What happens to our mental health when we’re navigating pregnancy, birth, postpartum, motherhood, grief, and everything in between?

In this conversation, Harmony S. Smith and I go way beyond the usual “pregnancy is beautiful” conversation and get into the parts people don’t always talk about like the anxiety, the fear, the grief, the nervous system, the identity shifts, and the emotional weight that can come with becoming a mother.

Harmony brings her experience as a therapist specializing in reproductive mental health to a conversation about prenatal anxiety, screening, embodied healing, birth and the nervous system, grief and loss, and what real reproductive healing and support can look like.

But this conversation is bigger than therapy. We also talk about advocacy, social justice, inclusivity, self-advocacy, community, and what it means to create spaces where people actually feel seen and supported.

One of the things I loved most about this conversation is that it doesn’t pretend we have to choose between hope and fear. Sometimes healing means making room for both.

Whether you’re navigating pregnancy, postpartum, motherhood, loss, reproductive trauma, or simply trying to find your way through a major life transition, this conversation is a reminder to give yourself some grace, advocate for yourself, find your people, and remember that healing is still possible.

As a therapist, Kayla creates space for people to feel seen, heard, and understood. Her work goes far beyond coping skills and diagnoses. It's about helping people reconnect with themselves, process their experiences, and remember that healing is possible. 

What makes this episode especially meaningful to me is that while we recorded it, I was running on no sleep and on the the struggle bus! Without intention or expectation, Kayla cracked me wide open and brought forward a vulnerable story I've wanted to share for a very long time. 

Every connection happens for a reason. I knew I was drawn to Kayla, but I wasn't expecting to experience a little more of my own healing in the process. It's a reminder to connect with people because you never know what they may unlock within you. 

This conversation felt like a physical manifestation of one of the books that first set me on my path at thirteen, Broken Open by Elizabeth Lesser. It reminded me that healing doesn't always happen through grand moments. Sometimes it happens in a conversation, through being witnessed, or in the presence of someone who knows how to hold space. 

Today we're talking about trauma, healing, vulnerability, motherhood, mental health, compassion, personal growth, and what it really means to hold space for yourself and others.
