What happens when life breaks you in ways you never imagined you could survive?
In this powerful episode of Hope Over Coffee, Jared sits down with Shane Miachel for an honest conversation about grief, loss, anger, brokenness, faith, and redemption.
Shane grew up in church and gave his life to Christ as a child. But as he entered adulthood, he drifted from his faith and found himself caught up in drinking, partying, and the rodeo lifestyle. He later joined the military and became an Army firefighter.
Then everything changed.
After becoming a father to his daughter Stephanie, Shane experienced an unimaginable loss. While serving as a firefighter at Fort Lewis, Washington, Shane responded to an emergency call involving an infant who wasn't breathing—only to discover the address was his own home.
His daughter was gone.
What followed was a season of devastating grief and loss. Shane's marriage fell apart, he walked away from the church, and he spiraled into drinking, substance abuse, anger, and isolation. He openly shares what it looked like to try to survive when life had seemingly taken everything from him.
But this isn't just a story about tragedy.
It's a story about what God can do with a broken man who finally gives Him control.
Years later, Shane returned to his faith and made the decision to rededicate his life to Christ. On December 2, 2024—the 25th anniversary of his daughter Stephanie's death—Shane and his wife were baptized together.
Today, Shane is helping lead men's and marriage groups and using the lessons from his own brokenness to help others.
His story is a reminder that being broken isn't the end of your story.
Sometimes the places where we hurt the most become the places where God does His deepest work.
If you've experienced grief, loss, addiction, a broken marriage, anger at God, or a season where you simply walked away from your faith, Shane's story will remind you that God isn't finished with you.
When life breaks you, what will you do with the pieces?
