John 12:20-33 and Isaiah 55:1-4
On this the fifth Sunday of Lent, we come to John’s account of the events surrounding what is traditionally known as Palm Sunday, taken from day 34 of the devotional readings. However, it is during this time that Jesus announces that "the hour has come.”
The hour he is referring to is the time for him to be glorified. But what tipped him off that it was time? It was the Greeks who were desiring to see him.
This is the summons that the Lord issued in Isaiah 55, calling "nations you know not" because the Lord God has endowed the Messiah with splendor.
Oddly enough though, this glory is not in a military conquest, but in his death. His death that is seed to bear more fruit than would have been possible through a military uprising.
This hour is the reason for his coming. His glory is bound to the glory of the Father. And it is to his glory that he would draw some of all types of peoples to himself.
The hour has come for the followers of Jesus to lift high the cross among the nations, and thus bring glory to Son and the Father. For this reason he came.
